Hello and Happy New Year to all of those brave enough to read my posts! 2011 promises to be a banner year for Premier Accessible Van Rentals as I am poised to create a market that currently doesn’t exist and can save us, the mobility impaired customer, a ton of money. What I am looking to do is replace those ambulette service companies (ie AMR, Ambassador, Hudson etc) with a van rental. When looking at this industry, I wanted to list the pro’s and con’s of each company (please note that under the con section, I am not pointing the finger at any particular company but rather using my own experiences and those experiences of my wheelchair bound friends)
Pro’s for Ambulette/Wheelchair Accessible Transportation:
A Driver is provided

Con’s:
Expensive (in excess of $8/mile + $80 pickup fee each way)
Unreliable (you’re at their mercy and being picked up an hour late or more is commonplace)
Inflexible (point A to point B only) Prescription stops, grocery shopping etc is extra
Uncomfortable (raised roof ambulances are extremely rough ridging and typically have tons of miles and ride like it)
Unfamiliar (who’s driving you? Is he behind schedule and now speeding? Distracted from taking dispatch instructions over the radio?)

Now, for renting a wheelchair van:
Pro’s:
Inexpensive (partial day rates starting at $75)
Reliable (You’re driving the van so theres no worry about missed appointments because your service was late)
Flexible (You’re the boss so feel free to grab lunch, fill a prescription, go shopping etc)
Comfortable (These are wheelchair accessible minivans no raised roof full size vans. The ride is infinitely better in a minivan. We can also remove the front passenger seat so you can ride in the front drivers side position fully secured in your wheelchair)
You or your assistant is the driver, so you travel the way want to travel

Con’s:
A driver is not provided
The driver (either yourself or your assistant) must posses a valid drivers license and be over 21)
Delivery and pickup can be provided but it costs extra for daily rentals

The Art of the Daily Rental

As I’m traveling on the train up to Boston to pick up a van, I can’t help but muse on the various ways that someone could take the most advantage of our service. That’s when I came upon what I’ll term for lack of a better word as “The Perfect Rental”. The perfect rental must make the most use of renting a wheelchair accessible van while keeping costs down to a minimum. One of my fundamental principles that makes Premier Accessible Van Rental different from our competitors is our commitment to customer service. One prime example of this commitment is Premier Accessible Van Rentals offering of daily rentals on the weekend. EVERY other wheelchair accessible van rental company in New England is not open on the weekend and their rentals require either a 2 or 3 day minimum. Not so with Premier.
Because a large part of my customer base have limited stamina, it is important that outings be shorter in duration. It’s the perfect example of the will being strong but the body being weak. Thats why I recommend stretching a 1 day rental into a 2 outing rental. For example, if one rents a van on an afternoon, has it delivered to wherever it’s needed (Premier offers free delivery in Central Connecticut as apart of it’s daily rate, something else that sets us apart from everyone else), everyone can get loaded up for a dinner, movie, play, etc. Wrap the evening up, get a good nights sleep and then start the day off with another outing. Religious services, doctors appointments, shopping or any other myriad of reasons why we like to/need to get out and about. Now we’ve accomplished 2 outings and only had to pay for a 1 day rental. It also takes into account that the person who necessitates the wheelchair van rental in the first place may not have the stamina for long outings. Weekend Rentals

As we dive into a beautiful New England Labor Day, I wanted to take some time and share my thoughts and ideas for ways that we can get out and enjoy the fall foliage.

Premier Accessible Van Rentals was established so that we, the mobility impaired community, could have the same access to high quality, wheelchair accessible vans for rent as our able-bodied counterparts.

Premier is THE ONLY wheelchair accessible van rental company that offers daily rental rates on the weekend. Other companies require a two day minimum. Not us. If your goal is to attend church services, weddings, graduations, family reunions or any other special event that requires wheelchair accessible transportation.

Howdy to everyone on this blazing New England Day. I hope that everyone is gearing up for some outdoor fun this Labor Day weekend. It looks like Mr. Earl will be past and our weekend should be beautiful.

So, if you’re thinking that you’d like to take that special someone out for the weekend, I still have a few of my wheelchair accessible vans available for the holiday weekend. Renting a wheelchair accessible van can be a daunting and overwhelming task the first time. I’m here to tell you it’s not.
